Hydrogen has a very broad flammability range—a 4 percent to 74 percent concentration in air and 4 percent to 94 percent in oxygen, at near ambient temperatures.
The minimum ignition energy (MIE) of hydrogen in air is approximately 0.019 mJ (one-fourteenth that of natural gas) and varies with the moisture content in air. This MIE drops further to below 0.005 mJ in the presence of oxygen.
The flame speed of hydrogen is at least eight times that of natural gas.
Traditional combustors partially premix or premix fuels (hydrogen) and air for controlling emissions. These methods therefore inherently carry signficant risks of flashback and damage to combustor components in attempting combustion of hydrogen with air. Legacy diffusion combustors offer an alternative, but with very high thermal NOx emissions due to the high heat release rates. Further, these technologies cannot be adapted to combustion of hydrogen with oxygen due to the very explosive nature of the resulting combustion.
InfigoLabs turns conventional combustion methods on its head to deliver a unique patent pending solution that does not premix hydrogen and oxygen, to eliminate any possibility of flashback. In addition, the Hydrox Combustion Technology (patent pending) ensures that the hydrogen-oxygen combustion zone propagates away from the fuel and oxidant admission points, eliminating any significant impingement with the combustor structure. Most importantly, the unique feature of the Hydrox Combustion Technology (patent pending) is to significantly retard the reaction rate to deliver a gradual rate of combustion to produce steam. The UniPhi Control System (patent pending) ensures that the Hydrox Combustion Technology (patent pending) operates at a unity equivalence ratio (phi = 1.0), thus ensuring complete combustion of hydrogen with minimal residual oxygen in the produced steam.
